Similar things were going on in the US. In 1830s, for example, German immigrants celebrated Christmas while their Anglo neighbors often did not.

And in Canada, in case anyone is dying to know, the first Christmas tree was lit by the Baroness von Riedesel in Sorel, Quebec on Christmas Eve 1781. She was the wife of General Baron von Riedesel, Commander of the Hessian and Brunswick troops stationed in Canada during the American Revolution.
