In response to Christmas, written by D'Anne on March 18, 1998 at 17:59:24

To L and T indexBookserve carry Jane Austen's Christmas by Maria Hubert. I have not seen this book- has anyone else?

The Tomalin biography has passing references to Christmas traditions and practices. In S&S, Christmas is described as the season which requires more than the usual number of dinners, and doesn't Emma have a Christmas Eve dinner?

I've got some references to Christmas traditions and practices that apply to Georgian times if you want them, D'Anne. What I will say for now is that the holiday was significant, but not celebrated quite in the way that Dickens and Coca-Cola envision it!
