To L and T indexBishops and Lords had the hereditary power to appoint whomsoever they wished to the post they controlled, and these posts (or livings) were often bought and sold, or saved for the benefit of relatives.


In Mansfield Park Edmund's father gives the family living to Dr. Grant, because of the debts of Tom. Does it mean that he sold the living? Dr. Grant, had to pay a lump-sum, or was he supposed to pay "rent", as if he were a tenant?
