One of the other things we don't consider is that up until a few generations ago, everybody's clothes and shoes were custom-made. We can't compare the fit of a mail-order costume, or even one made by a hobbyist, with that of clothes made by someone who has designed and sewn every garment she's ever worn. I suppose it's the same with all our material possessions today; we have lots and lots of stuff, but little of it is elegant...
