Sunday travelling

In "Persuasion", Anne suspects that Mr Elliot has been guilty of "Sunday travelling". Does this simply mean that he travelled on a Sunday, or was it something more sinister?
I noticed in "Northanger Abbey" (conveniently printed in the same volume) that Catherine Moreland is sent off by General Tilney on a Sunday. There is no comment that this makes his act even worse - was this because everyone at the time would have known it anyway, or did JA just change her mind between writing the two books?
