WWII's Affect on Fashion...

To L and T indexIt was just a few years after...about 1946...that Christian Dior (I think) introduced his New Look: that very full skirt look that was so 1950s. I believe this look might have occurred a few years earlier if not for WWII.
When P&P0 was being produced, perhaps designers were thinking of the full skirted look as something on the horizon...but then, the war came and changed all that, so it was postponed until the scarcity of the war years were over. I think designers were very much discouraged during the war effort from designing anything that used too much cloth...too many trimmings...etc., though someone can correct me on that if I am mistaken.

It is hard to watch P&P0 without wincing over the very obvious mistake they made in designing the clothes, though the costumes certainly are lovely enough---it just destroys the atmosphere, I guess.
