Intellectuals and bluestockings

What was the attitude to learned women in JA's day? I know that there was a lot of satire about women who knew too much, but what was the full range of attitudes? And what would render a woman 'learned'? Knowing Latin? Knowing too much about anything?
The reason I'm asking is because I have been waffling on merrily on the P&P board about how bizarre I find JA's attitude to this subject, compared to most women writers that I can think of. It seems to me that many C19th female novelists have a great respect for educated women, which JA doesn't share, and I don't know how much of it is to do with her character and how much reflects the atmosphere of her society.
