Susan, if you go back to the quick index (the golden Q at the top of this post) you will see a link to 'JA Travels' which is a collection of various people's trips last summer.If you are driving I can tell you that Chawton is about one hour from Heathrow, and close to the M3. Most people think it's really worth it!
Winchester is a fascinating place, and not just for Jane Austen connections. The Cathedral and close alone are worth more than a couple of hours, IMO, but then I'm biased....
