In response to Vicars, written by Linden on February 28, 1998 at 20:54:34] People were much more concerned about the issue later in the century (eg Trollope's Barchester novels), but JA seems remarkably unconcerned about it for someone who was a devout Christian.
Something tells me that Jane Austen was just looking for a part for her characters to play, an occupation that they could carry around to make them fit in. Their occupations had little to do with the plot, of course. The vicar characters were keystones in the story, having their own parts to play, but they needed a reason to be there.
