You are right, many beers were made with low alcohol ratings (not that they measured the S.G. in those days, I don't think!#-) Remember , too, that some "beer" drinks were not really alcoholic at all- gignger beer, for example can be completely non-alcoholic. Somewhere in the archives is Carolyn's posting of Colonel Amherst's Spruce Beer which is quite a good example.
