Condolence books

Condolence books are not usual at English funerals even nowadays. My Scottish grandmother kept a lot of momentos connected with families in Edinburgh & Portsmouth, including things from funerals that dated as far back as the 1840's (her mother had the same habits) and there aren't any condolence books. Lots of letters, cards, jet jewellery, etc but no books.
Sounds like an interesting story is on the way ;-)
