In response to Did Condolence books exist then?, written by Davidia on February 23, 1998 at 23:58:35
Condolence books are not usual at English funerals even nowadays. My Scottish grandmother kept a lot of momentos connected with families in Edinburgh & Portsmouth, including things from funerals that dated as far back as the 1840's (her mother had the same habits) and there aren't any condolence books. Lots of letters, cards, jet jewellery, etc but no books.
Sounds like an interesting story is on the way ;-)
