] It's interesting too how standards of cleanliness, or at least customs of washing differ between countries. In Australia, which of course is hot, I would never go a day without showering, and sometimes twice a day. When I was in Europe however, I found that a lot of people would only shower every second day and would have a stand up at the basin wash in betweeen - they didn't feel the need to get water on every part of their body every day.
] I must look for a book on the history of hygiene...
Sometimes I take 3 showers, if I have to go somewhere in the afternoon and I've been working or playing outside. (Confined to the hot humid summer months) Around here there are lots of history reinactments and they always make lye soap. In fact, my mom remembered from the late 20s and early 30s. In the time before AC and mom said you just got used to being hot and sticky and everyone sweated. But everyone used powder and deo. so not too many bad smells.
This is a very interesting topic. Thanks for this post Caroline.
