Smoking among gentlemen

Posted by Woodhouse on February 20, 1998 at 11:54:02:

To L and T indexMay I have the opinion of this learned group? How was smoking viewed in the regency period? Specifically, was it really considered inappropriate for a man to smoke a cigar in the presence of a lady if she did not object? Particularly out of doors, rather than inside the house.

Inside, I believe gentlemen did not generally smoke around women, but rather, retired to the smoking room or billiard room, etc.

Also, I have heard that among the lower classes, women smoked pipes, and wealthy ladies used snuff (yuk!) just as the men did. True?? I cannot think of any portion of Austen's work which discusses the issue of smoking. Have I missed something? Thanks!
