I read somewhere... that this also has to do with England's warring past.. During the middle ages and beyond, the crown wanted, or rather needed, the lands to stay in large parcels so that, in the time of war, the crown could more dependably call on large armies that were under one (hopefully loyal)lord. This is a little too simplistic, I know, but that is the gest of it.
