Caroline, I didn't discover this during my research and I am longing to know! BTW, I think you would enjoy a book by Eleanor Perenyi called Green Thoughts: A Writer in the Garden It is very informative, funny and and a wonderful book. She touches on some of the South American plants. She does make a point of how unappreciated the Spanish are for the preseervation of medicinal plants by the Spanish, whose accomplishments go unrecognized in the English speaking world.
