Unsympathetic heroes and heroines

JA has a lot of heroes and heroines with faults. This sounds like a lit. crit. question, but how does she make us like them anyway?
One way is to introduce a character who is even worse than they are. (I nicked this technique from JA when I was writing a short story about an unsympathetic heroine and I won a prize for it - Yippee!)
Some examples for your consideration:
"Emma" - Mrs Elton is even ghastlier than Emma.
P&P - Lady Catherine is even more of a snob, and Mr Collins makes an even stupider proposal, than Mr Darcy.
MP - Lady Bertram is even limper than Fanny Price.Thoughts, anybody?
