To L and T indexI can't tell you how I know, because I tried to look it up but could not find anything about this in my notes (books too), but I have the strong opinion that it was very much so customary. As far as the rules... I don't think it mattered whether the family was home or not. A home that was stately enough to attract visitors likely had enough room for the owners to allow the company in without showing their faces (did that make any sense at all?!) I don't think it was even customary (or rather automatic) for the family to greet these visitors... I think there is something about this in the book, "The Regency Companion."
