There's a book by Jilly Cooper called Class , which , deals with this question extensively. It's not a novel, it's whole book about the English Class system, and discusses all the vaguiaries, all the inconsistencies, all the stupidities, and all the advantages of the system and what it means in real life. It's written in her usual lively style, and though it's not meant as an academic study, it was quite well received by academia when it first came out. I don't think it's in print at the moment, but since it's only about ten years old, your library should be able to find it.
