Dear Marie Bernadette,
As far as I understand it, these places were for both men and women. Generally, only the men had the distinction of having masculine places to amuse themselves. It would have been perfectly fine for ladies to mingle with men, as long as they were not alone. You see this in Hyde Park, the Opera, etc.
