In response to Courtesy titles (eldest son of Earl), written by The Mysterious H.C. on February 04, 1998 at 20:10:08
] Hilary -- Col Fitz.'s father would be likely to have one or more subordinate titles, and his eldest son would use one of them as a "courtesy title; this would entitle him to be known as "Lord" + name of subordinate title, but not to sit in the house of lords (as a "real" peer does). This is sort of explained, in passing, on the honorifics page...
A real life example: before the late Princess Diana's father died, her brother, the current Earl Spencer, was called Viscount Althorp.
