There were many places the ladies could go to enjoy their "nuncheon" or snack such as an ice or pastry, without the men. They would have a chaperone, of course, whether it be a servant or an old aunt. Perhaps these places would not be situated in St. James' Street (with all those men's clubs!), but they were all over the place.
