In response to Class distinctions among servants?, written by Carolyn B on February 04, 1998 at 19:25:05

To L and T index
There were definate class distinctions among the servants and this is well portrayed in 'Upstairs,Downstairs". Also in the novel The Red and the Black by Stendahl the main character is a tutor and he eats with the family, albeit a little away at the end of the table. Probably in a very rich family he would have dined by himself or with the upper servants, but I thought it interesting that at least in Stendal's book, the tutor is right there with the fam.
