] what would you rather do if you were working class in JA's England - work as a servant in a Big House (or in a little one), or be independent and work in a factory? Or work from home, or be on a farm?
I think that people's mentality at that time was a little different from ours and the word "independence" had a slightly different meaning. Working in a factory could also mean to be independent if you had the means to support yourself. Besides, it seems to me that in most cases there was no real choice. It was limited by education, background and a more prescriptive concept of the social status.
As for me, if I were to go to JA's England on the condition of retaining my personality and character, I'd rather be a governess. There's not much freedom but I could have my books and thoughts and time for both.
