To L and T indexIn all seriousness, my knee-jerk reaction to Helen's question was "I'd rather be dead". Nothingness is better than a life lived in a bleak Hardy landscape... aestheticism has its limits and secures nothing. However, if non-being was not a possibility, servitude of the sort Helen suggests seems a far better condition than bogus "financial independence" gained in factory work. In the former, one sees a greater potential for the ability to retain a sense of self, and, hence any chance for freedom (in a psychological, not social/economic, sense).
