Mr D'arcy Wentworth was a real character in early Australian history.
Does anyone know whether JA could have known him (or known about him) or is it just a coincidence that she used his names for two of her heroes?
"Jane Austen in Australia" by Barbara Ker Wilson has JA meeting him on her (hitherto unknown to biographers) trip to Oz: he is as dashing as his names suggest.
Is this true - or was he, as I gloomily suspect, fat with bad teeth?
Thought - this may be the time for a Canadian fan of the Brontes to reveal the existence of a Georgian Nova Scotian called Heathcliff Rochester ;-)
