] I was rewatching S&S last night and I realized that soon after the father's death, Elinor & Marianne are wearing white or light colour dresses; aren't they supposed to wear black? He was a very close relative, so mourning should have lasted a long time, shouldn't it?
] In the book, they stayed six months at Norland, so there might have been time for them to move to a lighter shade of mourning. But I think, even during deep mourning, young, marriageable women had greater latitude in their mourning attire. For instance, a black ribbon or trim might suffice on a white gown.
