To L and T index ] I was wondering what men wear when they are in mourning for a close relative. And how long do they stay in deep mourning versus half-mourning? I've found references to arm bands only, but... Also, what do children wear and for how long?

] I was rewatching S&S last night and I realized that soon after the father's death, Elinor & Marianne are wearing white or light colour dresses; aren't they supposed to wear black? He was a very close relative, so mourning should have lasted a long time, shouldn't it?

] In the book, they stayed six months at Norland, so there might have been time for them to move to a lighter shade of mourning. But I think, even during deep mourning, young, marriageable women had greater latitude in their mourning attire. For instance, a black ribbon or trim might suffice on a white gown. This is dredged up from distant memory, so don't quote me. COnsult the knowledgeable Mr. H.C. for archives.
