] I know its significance, of course, and roughly what it is. What I don't know is why this particular town? Was it simply the Scots town closest to the border, so easiest (& cheapest!) to elope to? Or did it have some other advantage over other Scots towns? It's certainly the accepted place to run off to for centuries.

I believe it was partly due to the fact that it was one
of the towns closest to the boarder.Most elopers chose to run
to Gretna Green because Scotland was not subject to the Marriage
Acts of England.I am not quite sure just how,but I can check in
a book I have that has the info and post back tomorrow if you do
