In response to Servants and stewards and butlers (oh my!) :-), written by MariaH on February 02, 1998 at 12:35:21

To L and T index
] I've had a good look through the FAQ for this (excellent isn't it - got caught up there!) but couldn't find anything.

] What would be the duties of the servants in a big house (like Pemberley fro example) - what would a steward be responsible for as opposed to the butler? Or a footman, valet, housemaid, housekeeper?

] Sorry if this has already been asked and I missed it...

It seems to me that a good alternative source for much of this information would be for you to view the TV Series "Upstairs & Downstairs" (set in the Edwardian era).
I don't think they had a steward (because they didn't have acountry estate?), but they included all the major male & female servants - including (in later episodes) a chauffeur!

Happy hunting!

Trouble is - it was more than a mini-series & ran a long time ago, so where do you get access to a copy?
] Thanks!

] :-)
