I know its significance, of course, and roughly what it is. What I don't know is why this particular town? Was it simply the Scots town closest to the border, so easiest (& cheapest!) to elope to? Or did it have some other advantage over other Scots towns? It's certainly the accepted place to run off to for centuries.
Also, what precisely was it about Scots law that made it easier to get married? No reading of the banns? Lower age of consent?
