To L and T index
Daniel Pool's book WHAT JANE AUSTEN ATE, etc, has a quick and dirty chapter on the duties of each servant. As has been mentioned here often, however, the book contains a few errors. The chapter on servants looks ok to me, for what it is worth. This book is available in most libraries and bookstores.

Another great source, if you or anyone you know, belongs to the National Trust or the Royal Oak Foundation, is an article which appeared in the Summer '97 National Trust Magazine called 'Serving Petworth' by Diana Owen. The article has a Victorian slant but is very well written. Petworth, in West Sussex, was or is (I think) the seat of the earls of Egremont.

Ms. Owen has also authored the guide to Petworth's servant quarters which I understand contains a wealth of information regarding servants in a huge house. Write them at 36 Queen Anne's Gate, London SW1H 9AS. Good luck.
