] The historical detail is outstanding, the first page opens to a diagram of the sails of a square-rigged ship, hung out to dry in a calm. I thought it might be useful to someone or even entertaining.
There is now a companion to the O'Brian novels titled A Sea of Words; I saw it in Barnes & Noble over the weekend. It has several short introductory essays on life at sea (about 30 pp. worth), and then a several hundred page dictionary of terms nautical & period, geographical, etc. It might be worth it to those wanting some more nautical information.
