] Thank you to the people who answered my question about sprigged muslim. It is much appreciated.
] In yet another anecdote from Jane's letters she mentions ladies decorating their hats/bonnets with fruit eg strawberries as oppossed to flowers.
These hats were adorned with fake vegetation, not the real thing. Even the flowers would have probably been made of silk. "flowers are very much worn, & fruit is still more the thing - Eliz: has a bunch of strawberries, and I have seen grapes, cherries, plumbs and apricots." She also goes on to say later that four or five "very pretty sprigs" of floral decoration might be had "for the same money which would procure only one Orleans plumb". Jane always had money to consider and "besides", she wrote to Cassandra "I cannot help thinking that it is more natural to have flowers grow out of the head than fruit. What do you think on that subject?" Also consider that the different fruits had different growing seasons and thus could not be real.
