There may very well have been alarms, the mechanism looks actually very simple. It does not look very different from the same mechanism that makes the clock chime. It's just smaller.
I'd like to see your's too! How old is it? Perhaps we can swap E-Mail. Whenever I get around to it I can snap a photo and E-mail it to you. Not anytime soon - I am terribly slow at this scanning stuff! I seem to have plenty of time for Pemberley though!
