What is a faggot?

In Sir Walter Scott's ghost story there is "the flaming bickering faggots in the chimney, that sent at once their gleam and their warmth through the snug apartment..."

I can only assume it is firewood, or the iron firedogs the wood sits upon. I just never heard it refered to as a faggot before.
