The education of young ladies

In Darcy's famous letter, we read concerning Georgiana, "About a year ago, she was taken from school, and an establishment formed for her in London."

My question is two-fold.

  1. Did they have schools that young ladies could attend? What were their nature?
  2. What is an "establishment"?
