Fruity hats?

Thank you to the people who answered my question about sprigged muslim. It is much appreciated.

In yet another anecdote from Jane's letters she mentions ladies decorating their hats/bonnets with fruit eg strawberries as oppossed to flowers.

She mentions amusingly that she has seen nuts and larger fruit at the greengrocer's but not on hats ....yet.

Question: is she serious? How long did this trend last? How did ladies stop birds from pecking at the fruit?
