Maria, this is a very good question and one I do not necessarily have and answer for, but just some thoughts about.

As I can imagine it, the world was a lot smaller place then (community speaking). People were not as worldly and the family you came from before you were married was just as important as who you were known as now. You know, the stature thing. It would just be another way of identifying you with your family connections, wealth, postition etc.

My grandparents, who are of Italian descent, grew up in the same town in New York. When they get together with relatives and the talk turns to mutual acquaintances, they identify those people by the street on which they lived, like (the castellano's of bleaker street). I always thought that was very interesting, and rather funny to boot.
