Thank you more than I can say for all the information you have posted. I wonder if the novels I have been reading for years were not researched as meticulously as you have done. I had the distinct impression that the bride's fortune became the possession of the groom unless her family had the forsite to 'tie it up' so that the husband (usually known to be a wastrel) could not dissipate it. All too frequently, that was not the case.
