You, sir, are a man of impeccable taste, great refinement, good breeding and delicate sentiment, if your proposal speaks of your character. Go to it!

My own dear Mr. Chancey proposed to me on bended knee on the steps of the antebellum Alabama state courthouse in Montgomery, while both of us were dressed in period attire. It was 1:00 p.m. by the courthouse clock, the exact time when Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederacy on the very spot. There were sweet breezes in the air and the sound of birds in nearby trees. A sweet speech, given in low, trembling tones, was followed by the presentation of a 150-year-old ring box containing a spectacular diamond solitaire. I had to remove a glove to accept the token of my betrothal.

May your lady answer with the same confident "Yes! that I did a year and a half ago, and may your lives be as enriched and blessed as ours have been since!

With all good wishes,
I remain, etc.
Mrs. Matthew Chancey
