I have occasionally wondered what is a folly? ... I understand it to be a building of some kind, but not really, more like a facade, a sham. What is the purpose of it, if it is only a sham? I would appreciate this info, as I've seen this word crop up in English novels, over and over, and it's puzzled me, for I haven't ever been able to find the definition in a dictionary and it seems to have been some building of a sort, popular during the Georgian/Regency periods.
