Lord Marchmain's family was not Catholic but he converted to Catholicism when he married (probably around the turn of the 20th C) and he built the chapel at Brideshead as a present for his wife. The children were all raised Catholic, but when she died, they closed the chapel because there were not enough Catholics on the estate to justify keeping it open.
