Look up Eliza de Feuillide in any biography of Jane Austen, and you'll get a blow-by blow account of an Anglo-French marriage...complete with emigration, retitution attempts, and a beheading!

Civil weddings didn't exist, I don't think. Catholics and dissenter weddings did, of course, and I have never found that they had less legality than those of the Church of England.
