This is not completely on the subject, however, I was wondering about the French émigré in England and how they would have practised their religion in England at that time. Also, if a French
]émigré wanted to marry an Englishwoman (the French and English did intermarry, more than people realise) would she have to become Catholic or would he have to become Protestant and marry her in the Church of England? Which brings me to another question (if you would be so kind as to indulge me): What if a couple were not religious at all? The Deists, Socinians, atheists, agnostics, et. al of the previous century did not just disappear into thin air. What sort of non-religious marriage ceremonies were available? A registry office, aboard ship, the mayor of a town? I have been wondering about these things for awhile now and have not been able to track down any answers.
