...Johnson, so I guess that qualifies as a "serious" author...or, at least, I've never been able to discern a sense of humor in him! And I agree with the phrase "self-deprecating". That works a lot better for me than thinking JA overly serious, especially about herself. Perhaps our opinions on this matter sat more about our personalities than they do about Jane's.
