Monetary Equivalents

I've been trying to figure out what the equivalent amounts
of cash today would be to the figures like "10,000 a year"
and so on that Austen mentions. Every time I think I've
figured it out (5 times current value? 10 times?) I come
across another monetary reference that doesn't work out
with my figures.

Anyone ever seen anything scholarly or authoritative on this?
