Have you seen any modern etiquette book that would include it? I doubt such a book exists!
However, from what I read about that century I understand that for the balls at least they had special ladies room arranged where ladies could mend their dresses or tidy the hair or even change. In fact in a couple of novels the heroins used it as an excuse to avoid an unpleasant conversation.
