With regard to gentlemen's attire, can anyone explain the difference between a STOCK and a CRAVAT? In much of my reference material, they are used interchangeably, and I cannot think that this is right.

Is a stock perhaps the band (black?) which goes around the shirt collar? Does anyone know when a stock was or was not used? What was it made of, and what color was it?

I am very confused and would appreciate your help. Thanks much!
