...but I never thought of it this way. I always took it as ironic and as a slight "dig" at contemporary authors who were doing that (according to Sir Walter Scott) "Big Bow-Wow strain". I don't think she seriously considered adding any "long discourses"; she let her feelings and opinions be known in a less didactic way through her characters and their "fates".

Perhaps...though I like to think that under that irony she was actually being very, very serious...she knew how it would be judged, whether she agreed with it or not. And I think it shows that she was very much a 'child of enlightenment', though not ,perhaps the way Patrick meant it!
