] Mr and Mrs Edwards drink a dish of tea. What the heck is that and how would you drink it?
I've seen that expression in lots of 18th c. writing and believe it really refers to drinking tea, not some kind of euphemism. I've often wondered if it comes from those very wide, shallow tea cups, sometimes without handles, more of a shallow bowl than a cup, and if this kind of object could be called a 'dish'.
