There was a time, but don't remember when and whether it was isolated to a certain geographic location, that people poured the liquid from the cup onto what I would call the saucer. They sipped it carefully from the "dish." Maybe that's what they're talking about. One could soak up the liquid more easily with a muffin this way too. (I think that was considered okay.) I know dipping the food in the cup was frowned upon--probably because of the splash the food makes when it gets too wet and falls off into the drink! EL
